Introduction
The registers of St. Helens up to 1787 were published in 1968 as this Society’s 107th volume. The present publication continues the baptisms and burials to the end of 1812 and the marriages to 1837.
Baptisms and burials are contained in two of the registers described in Volume 107, Part I. The third and fourth marriage registers covering the period 1786 to 1837 are of standard form and require no comment.
Dates of baptism have been given to the left and dates of birth to the right of the entry*. Standard abbreviations have been used, see list, and editorial comments enclosed in square brackets and italicised.
The Chapel’s burial ground is referred to in 1798 as the ‘New Ground’. In it portions were allocated to the townships of Eccleston, Sutton and Windle. Within the last few years this burial ground has been cleared for redevelopment but prior to the clearance a list of tombstone inscriptions was made by the local Authority.
Loosely inserted in the fourth marriage register are nine affidavits dated 1822 — 3, and sworn before the Minister of the Chapel or a Justice of the Peace. They have been copied and are given on page 133. They record age, marital status, place of residence and period of stay of those about to marry. It is unusual for such affidavits to be retained.
The word pauper, often misspelled as poper, occurs much more fre- quently from 1788 to 1793 than in any other period and its frequency may be connected with the imposition from 1 October 1783 of a stamp duty of threepence on each entry of baptism, birth, marriage and burial (23 Geo. Ill c. 67). Some parishioners may have preferred to be recorded as paupers rather than pay the tax. The Act was repealed on 4 October 1794 (34 Geo. Ill c. 11).
An interesting footnote to a baptismal entry for David Scarborough, 31 March 1799, which has been photographed, records that he was the first child in this area to be inoculated with vaccine. That this was worthy of comment is shown by the fact that Edward Jenner, the discoverer of vaccination was still looking for volunteers in 1798 and it was not until a few years later that vaccination became an established practice (1). Another interesting entry of which a photograph is reproduced is the marriage on 2 September 1818 of a daughter of Dr. Adam Clarke, the eminent Methodist biblical scholar who had retired in 1815 to Millbrook
(v)
House, Eccleston (2). Two of the witnesses to this marriage were Budd- hist priests who had come from Ceylon to be instructed by Dr. Clarke in the Christian doctrine (3). They sign the register in Singhalese and in the anglicised version of their names.
A study of the entries in the registers shows how the area was devel- oping. The place-name Hardshaw, occurring frequently up to 1795 gradu- ally disappears over the next few years being replaced by the name of St. Helens. The industrial nature of the area is shown by references to colleries, copper works, foundries, glass works, a mug pottery and a slitting mill. The last named, sited at Ashton is first mentioned in 1788. With regard to the workers, colliers and labourers predominate but there are also the copper workers, glass workers, iron workers, nailers, tool- makers, watchmakers etc. Combs are still being made in the area, some of horn and ivory. Among other occupations is that of a comedian, John Feriza whose daughter, Letitia Matilda Emma was baptized in 1799.
The Sutton Workhouse is referred to in 1800 and the Windle Work- house in 1801.
The Society is indebted to the Rev. Canon K. W. Coates, B. A., L.Th. Vicar of St. Helens for permission to copy and publish the registers and to the British Academy, the St. Helens Corporation and the Parochial Church Council for grants towards the cost of printing this volume. The author also thanks Mr. C. Ashurst, the verger, for his kindness and help. References:
