Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Chemical Experiments -- Miscellaneous Books

These twenty-seven notebooks were used during 1911-1920 for notes onchemical preparations and experiments pertaining to storage batteries, disc records, and other applications. The experimenters include Peter C. Christensen, W. B. Davis, F. Detlef, Jr., N. M. Elias, A. W. Henzell, F. Walter Horner, D. Juan Marley, William H. Mason, H. J. Miller, Y. Nakamigawa, Edwin N. Rosenfield, Frank S. Shapiro, Edwin Smith, Jr., Robert E. Waterman, C.G. Williamson, and Max Young. There are notes relating to various batches of chemicals and chemical reagents, including paraphenylenediamine ("para’), acetanilide, paranitroacetanilide, nitrobenzene, aniline, phenol, chioronitrobenzol, Castner soda, lacquers, shellacs, and Vaseline. Also included are experimental notes on the sulfonation of benzol, the silvering of mirrors, colloids, metallic flake, alpha-naphthol, and naphtha residue. Four notebooks with notations by Edison have been selected in whole or in part.

Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Chemical Experiments -- Miscellaneous Books Notebook N-14-12-16.2

This notebook was used during December 1914-November 1915, probably by Peter C. Christensen, for notes on chemical experiments. The entries describe various batches of chemicals, including paranitroacetanilide, nitrobenzene, aniline, acetanilide, chloronitrobenzol, and para- phenylenediamine ("para"). Some of the entries include notations by Edison. Inserted into the book is a large drawing by Edison of the production flow for “mother liquor," along with several other items bearing notations by Edison. The front cover is marked "1." The spine is labeled "Para - 1." The book contains 202 numbered pages, many of which are blank.

Mr. BF. G6. Pullin: Subject - Scrap Celluloid.

‘The Celluloid Co. contract with the Cylinder Division provides for the return-of cylinder cuttings and such other cylinder celluloid material as may be absolutely clean, at a price of 40 cents per lb. The other scrap made by this Division was sold at 9 cents per 1b. through the Salvage Division, to other bidders, as the Celluloid Co. would not bid on it.

There is no contract with Celluloid Co. on discs. These have been bought on purchase orders placed when needed, giving the Celluloid Co. two month's notice, which they demanded. These orderS made no provision for return of scrap. :

Under the system in operation, providing for the sale of all waste material through the Salvage Division, for our account, all unusable celluloid discs were handled by them, either here or at Silver Lake, as they decided was most advisable. Tf it accumu- leted here in such amount as to make a bad fire hazard, and there was no immediate market for it, it was sent to Silver Lake.

? The average price offered was 12 cents per Lb. unclened or 18 cents per lb. cleaned. As the approximate cost of cleaning Was 3 cents per 1b. it was cleaned and sold at 18 cents.

; There is now a lot of about 2500 lbs. in the Wash House opposite Gate #13 at Silver Lake. About one third of this has : been cleaned. © The balance is wncleaned as the men working on : : thia job have been laid off. The tank for cleaning is alongside : i : the celluloid. : :

Mr. Edsall, who has been taking care of this material, states that it has not been sold because he cannot get a fair price for it for immediate removal. The best offer is only 13 cents per lb. cleaned. The Celluloid Co. will not do better than 5 eents per 1b. cleaned (see their letter attached) and the Du Pont

people have declined to bid on it.

Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Group 6: Miner's Safety Lamp Experiments (1914)

These two notebooks were used by Leroy E. Briggs, Zachariah P. Halpin, and A. L. Townsend in 1914 for experiments on miner's safety lamps. The books describe work with batteries, brass reflectors, bulbs, and other parts of the lamp. Also included are designs for new lamp fixtures and tests of candle power with various lamps. Some of the entries pertain to the testing of locomotive headlights. Related material can be found in Kinetophone and Kinetoscope Experiments—L. E. Briggs Books, N-1 3-03-18.2 [selected] and N-13-05-22, N-13-12-30.2, N-13-11-07 [not selected]; Battery Experiments —Experimenters' Books—Paul D. Payne Book, N-20-11-01; and General Experiment Books—Z. P. Halpin Books, N-13-03-14 and N-14-07-26.

Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Miner's Safety Lamp Experiments Notebook, N-14-07-09

This notebook was used by Leroy E. Briggs during July-September 1914 for experiments on miner's safety lamps. The first entry includes a list of things to do and questions to ask in pursuing improvements to the lamp. The following entries consist of daily logs of Briggs' activities and experimental work, including battery tests for locomotive headlights. Some of the notes mention suggestions made by Edison, such as trying different methods of using safety springs on a lamp or using different brass bulbs. Other entries include detailed information on Briggs's conferences with Edison regarding these experiments. The front cover is labeled "Thomas A Edison Lab. Book No. 4 Mine Lamps L. E. Briggs." The pages are unnumbered. Approximately 75 pages have been used.

Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Group 7: Battery Experiments (1909-1929)

The 549 notebooks in this group cover the period 1909-1929. They were used by Walter N. Archer, E. E. Dougherty, John A. Hanley, Miller Reese Hutchison, Paul D. Payne, Harold H. Smith, and numerous other experimenters. Six books with indications of oversight or involvement by Edison have been selected in whole or in part.

The notebooks are arranged in six subgroups:

. M. R. Hutchison Books (6 notebooks)

. J. A. Hanley Books (21 notebooks)

. Experimenters’ Books (77 notebooks)

. Cell Test Books (293 notebooks)

Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Battery Experiments -- M. R. Hutchison Books

These six notebooks were used by Miller Reese Hutchison and Waiter E. Holland in 1911-1912. They contain experimental notes on battery cells for submarines, along with data on battery cell tests. Also included are entries on "explosion experiments" to determine how to prevent the explosion of gases from the cells. Some of the notes deal with the separation of flake for use in battery manufacture.

One notebook has been selected. N-Number Labels and Inscriptions on Front Cover Selected Books

Notebook Series -- Notebooks by Experimenters Other Than Edison Battery Experiments -- M. R. Hutchison Books Notebook, N-11-04-14

This notebook was used by Miller Reese Hutchison during March-May 4911 for experimental notes on battery cells for submarines, along with other cell tests. Included are entries on “explosion experiments" to determine how to prevent the explosion of gases from the cells. Also included are experiments with the oxidation of nickel to ascertain the best method of rendering the grids of Edison cells dielectric. One entry contains a list of suggestions from Edison regarding the preparation of dielectric nickel. There are also notations by Hutchison concerning Edison's comments and suggestions about his work. The front cover is labeled "Experiment Submarine Cells MR Hutchison Edison Laboratory" and "501." An index appears on the flyleaf. The book contains 150 numbered pages, many of which are blank, followed by approximately 30 unnumbered pages. At least one page has been removed from the book.
